The Embassy of France in Ottawa, Canada, has today confirmed verbally that France intends legislation to give adoptees access to identifying records hitherto closed.

Following the appointment of Mary Hanafin TD as the new Minister for Adoption in Ireland, Kevin Cooney of the Adopted Peoples Association had a good working meeting with her and her officials to discuss the forthcoming access to adoption information legislation, titled "Post Adoption Information and Associated Issues Bill". It is hoped this Bill will receive Cabinet approval at Easter.
The Department officials described the legislation as a mixture of selecting the best elements of the British Columbia Adoption Act and the New South Wales Act. Kevin describes the proposed Bill as almost "a fulfillment of our wish list!" Kevin Cooney has been the heart and soul of the energy behind the lobbying efforts to achieve this legislation.
